National Nurses Week

Let's celebrate National Nurses Week! Thank you nurses.

You are appreciated. šŸ’

Our collaborative effort in multidisciplinary teams brings about healing for many individuals, families and communities. I enjoy working with nurses because nurses understand and implement the "soft skills" in the medical field. Soft skills for nurses include communication, professionalism, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, adaptability, active listening, compassion, empathy, etc. Recently, medical doctors training integrates additional soft skills for longer amounts of time in their practice. Most MDs are known for spending 5 to 15 minutes of time with patients. Much of the time is spent with the MD's nurse on staff.

As a clinician who is also a doctor, PhD, people are shocked when I tell them they will have 1 hour or 90 minutes for their therapy session. "Are you a doctor?", they say. "Yes, I have a doctorate in the philosophy of marriage and family therapy." is my reply. Most people who ask are shocked because of the difference between the time expected of the medical doctor and the therapist with doctorate. The difference between the medical model and behavioral health model and insurance reimbursement might shock you, if you researched the details of cost & payout rates. Ultimately, I resonate with nurses because they listen to clients' stories in detail. The nurses provide counsel before the counselors on staff arrive, contingent upon the setting.

Nurses, and healing professionals, are at greatest risk of vicarious traumatization due to higher rates of supporting clients' healing processes after traumatic experiences, crisis situations and/or working long hours. So, nurses I SEE YOU! I CELEBRATE YOU! I APPRECIATE YOU!

I hope you make time for what nourishes, revitalizes, and balances you - Spirit, Soul & Body. #HappyNursesWeek
